Life Lessons | Welcome to My “Office”

5 February 2019 I was on a Johannesburg-Harare Air Zimbabwe flight UM462. I was with my wife and first born daughter, Paris; as we were returning home from a shopping trip in Pretoria where we had gone to buy the preparation for our now late second born daughter; Camilla. After undergoing all the check-in and immigration procedures, we proceeded to boarding gate B21 for our 19:00 hours’ departure out of Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport.

As I left my family seated at the boarding gate waiting for the commencement of the routine procedures, I went to the gents’ toilets. There was a guy who was busy cleaning the toilets inside. When I entered he obviously noticed me and raised his head full of smiles and greeted me: “Good evening sir. Welcome to my office. You are free to use any of the toilets I have already cleaned”. I was utterly shocked. This guy is “welcoming” me into his “OFFICE?” Which office is he talking about? As I left the toilet, he smiled at me again and said, “Have a safe flight sir”. I turned my head backwards and just gave him a R50 note I had in my pocket as a courtesy. He had not asked me for anything. I smiled back, thanked him and left him in his “office”.

Now, I can write a 1,000 paged book based on this short experience. But as for you, what do you learn from this guy? His approach and modus operandi to life? Say it.
