The Habit of Repairing Other People’s ‘Small Holes and Leaks’

One day Elman was asked to paint a boat and he charged $650. He brought with him paint and brushes and began to paint the boat with bright red colour as per the owner’s instructions.

As Elman went on with his work, he suddenly noticed that there was a small hole in the hull of the boat. Given his work instinct, he quietly repaired the hole and continued with his contracted work.

On completion, the owner paid him his $650 and Elman left in high spirits.

The following day, the owner of the boat returned to Elman and presented him with a $200,000 cheque! This came as a huge shock to Elman because he had already been paid his $650 for the contracted work.

He asked the owner of the boat in shock: "Sir, what is this money for? Are you forgetting that you have already paid me for painting the boat?”

The owner replied: “This money is not for the painting job. It is for the repairs you did to the hole on the hull of the boat!”

“Aaah, sir! But that was such a small service”, lamented Elman. “Certainly it is not worth paying me for, especially this much. No! The act was so insignificant that I did not even bother to tell you about it”.

The owner of the boat explained his position to Elman with tears in his eyes. “My dear friend, you do not understand. Let me tell you this…. When I contracted you to paint the boat, I forgot to mention about the hole. So when the boat dried, my children took the boat in my absence and went on a fishing trip. They had no idea that there was a hole in its hull.

“When I returned and realised what had happened, I was desperate and anxious because I knew exactly how dangerous the whole game had become”, he paused a bit with his eyes further tearing.

“Imagine the huge relief and joy when I saw my children returning back alive from the fishing journey! In utter shock of the miracle I had just experienced, I stood and began examining the boat. Then I saw that you had repaired that hole! You see, now, that what you did was literally saving my family from the jaws of death?”

“Elman, you saved the lives of my children! I do not have enough money to pay you for this priceless gesture!”

Elman began to realise how his seemingly ‘insignificant’ gesture had literally proved the difference between life and death! Woooow, he was just shocked too.

The Life Lesson:
No matter what the circumstances are, just continue doing good deeds even for nothing! Help, sustain, wipe tears, listen attentively and carefully repair all the ‘holes and leaks’ you find in people’s lives. You may never know the significance of your actions. Within the whole equation, there is a God who remembers to pay back!

You need also to know that as you continue repairing people’s “holes and leaks”, you may even die without knowing the extend of the impact of your actions. Fortunately, God does know all that.

So keep on keeping on.
