Service and Sacrifice – The Middle Names Of Our Mothers

Whose is the heart that bursts with pride each time she sees your face?
Whose are the eyes that dart about, to check your world is safe?
Whose are the arms that wrap you up and hold you tight and close?
Whose is the love that is always there whenever you need it most?

Service and Sacrifice – The Middle Names Of Our Mothers

Whose is the smile that lights the room when you are smiling too?
Whose shoulder is the place to be, when only a cuddle will do?
Whose chest is warm and comforting when you are a weary soul?
Whose motivation only has your happiness as her goal?

Whose are the tears that cry for you as you grow old and free?
Whose is the heart that aches so much, in the space where you should be?
Whose is the head that knows you must find your path alone?
Whose is the voice who welcomes you each time you go back home?

Who could have so many facets that make her so great?
Who has you on her mind each day, and today we celebrate
Whose hands hold and guide you, in a way unlike another?
All these are part and parcel of the joys of being a mother.

We are blessed to have you as our dear mothers
Some mothers have sacrificed their luxuries to make their children happy
Some mothers cannot read nor write but have raised graduates
Some mothers are now sick because they have worked hard for their families

We are here to celebrate you our mothers
By mothers we mean all women who have contributed in our lives
Some might not have biological children of their own
But we still feel honoured to have them as our mothers in life

We also celebrate the lives of our dear fathers
Who were left as single parents to raise their children
They have learnt through hardships to become both mothers and fathers
Today, we salute you the heroes of our lives

Service and Sacrifice – The Middle Names Of Our Mothers

One notable speaker tried to summarise motherhood in a single paragraph: “Regardless of the different levels of development and education, all mothers are multi-skilled in life. They can do the following four things simultaneously:

1. Holding a breast-suckling child with her left hand.
2. Talking on a mobile phone placed and balanced between the right shoulder and the right ear.
3. Use the right hand to cook relish on the stove, and
4. Use the left foot to shine the house with a mutton cloth.

Such are our mothers; whose middle names are service and sacrifice!
