Children Honour
and Obey Your Parents
Everyone born into this world is born of a mother
and a father. This is so regardless of whether the conception of the child was
due to mutual consent, mistake, out of wedlock, rape or artificial
insemination. Even if the conception was done improperly, it still gives out a complete
child. And it is important to note that even if the process that brought you into
your earthly existence is devoid of godliness, it does not make you less of a
human being. You are born with an image of God; and God still loves you and has
a good plan for you.
But as you grow up, and begin to learn about your
parents’ mistakes; you could be tempted to talk ill about them. This works
against your prosperity; and is counterproductive to your earthly endeavours.
The Bible gives us two clear instructions about
our parents:
1. Honour
Your Parents:
Exodus 20:12 – “Honour
your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the
Lord your God is giving you”. This instruction did not specify about
honouring ‘good parents’ only. It is all-inclusive. Whether you perceive your
parents to be failures, morally bankrupt, segregative or irresponsible; that is
devoid of the instruction. Your role is to honour them so that ‘your days may be long upon the land’. Therefore,
in principle, the length of your life on earth is predictive: as long as you honour your parents; you
will live long!
2. Obey
Your Parents:
Ephesians 6:1 – “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right”. It is
another instruction given to children through the Apostle Paul. Of course, your
parents may sometimes tell you to do things that are evil and unacceptable in
the eyes of God; those ones you cannot do. Reject them with honour and dignity
on their part. Express your reservations with clear explanations why you cannot
do that. For instance; you cannot obey a
parental instruction which asks you to kill your uncle or steal from your
neighbour. But with all factors pointing to the right direction, you got to
obey the instructions of your parents.
The Cries
of a Genuine Parent
Proverbs 1:8 – “My son, hear the instruction of your
father, and do not forsake the law of your mother”.
Proverbs 23:22 – “Listen to your father who begot you; and do
not despise your mother when she is old”.
Genuine parents will always love
and embrace their children. They have lost so much peace, joy, beauty and
resources in order to build a better tomorrow for their children. They might
not be pleasant to look at, but that scruffy outlook is testimony to the
battles they have fought in order to make ends meet for their families. The least
we can do is honour, obey and respect them.
From today, if you had not been a
good child, sit down to think about it! Come on; let’s show our parents some love!
